About Chefs on Fire
It’s no coincidence that Europe’s best gastronomic festival has such an authentic atmosphere—it was born out of family history.
It all started when Gonçalo Castel-Branco’s sister asked to celebrate his birthday in a special way. Gonçalo improvised an outdoor feast for 60 guests at a countryside house in Alentejo—without a kitchen. At 4 AM, he lit a fire in the ground, buried vegetables, and hung meat and pineapples from cork oak branches, letting the flames do the rest. The result: a magical banquet shared among friends.
That spirit of connection, generosity, and creativity sparked the idea for Chefs on Fire—an innovative festival where top national and international chefs cook with fire, accompanied by the music of emerging artists, in one-of-a-kind setings.
